Description
A very warm welcome, friend, to a hidden pocket of time in the heart of Daikanyama. You have discovered the Kyu-Asakurake House, a beautiful, wooden sanctuary that survived the Great Kanto Earthquake and the war to tell us the story of the Taisho era. Built in 1919 by a prominent local leader, it stands as a dignified, silent witness to a century of change, offering a profound contrast to the modern city outside.
As you step into the entrance, remove your shoes and feel the cool wood beneath your feet. You are walking through a masterpiece of Japanese architecture. Notice the sunlight filtering through the old, wavy glass panes, casting soft, rippling shadows on the tatami mats. The house is designed to embrace the seasons; the sliding doors open wide to blur the line between the interior and the nature outside. It is a place of shadows, texture, and refined elegance.
The garden is the house’s soul. Carved into the steep cliffside, it is a deep, emerald world of stone lanterns, mossy paths, and towering maples. In autumn, the view from the veranda is breathtaking, a canvas of fiery red and gold. We are so happy you are here to experience this quiet, nostalgic “Taisho Romance.” Please, sit on the veranda, listen to the wind in the trees, and let the peace of this special place wash over you.
