Highlights
- The Steps to Success: Brace yourself for the Shusse no Ishidan—86 steep, dramatic stone steps leading to the shrine. Legend says a samurai bravely rode his horse up them, winning his shogun’s favor and instant fame. Climbing them is a powerful ritual for career and life success.
- A Hilltop Oasis: This is the highest natural point in Tokyo’s 23 wards. Once a lookout for fires, this green hill is now a tranquil, leafy sanctuary floating above the surrounding skyscrapers of the business district.
- The Guardian of Fire: Founded in 1603 by Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu, this shrine is dedicated to the god of fire, protecting the city from disaster and, in modern times, blessing businesses with prosperity.
- The Koi-Filled Pond: Behind the main hall, discover a lovely, quiet pond. Its calm water is filled with vibrant, colorful koi carp, creating a perfect spot for peaceful reflection.
Description
Welcome, dear friend, to Atago Jinja, a magical shrine hidden in the sky. You have left the bustling city at the street level and found a secret, sacred world. To reach this place, you must climb the legendary “Steps to Success.” Each step you take is part of a 400-year-old story of courage, and it is said to bring you closer to your own ambitions.
Once at the top, you’ll find yourself in a peaceful, wooded oasis, a true haven from the city below. This shrine was built on Tokyo’s highest natural hill by the great Shogun Ieyasu to watch over his new capital and protect it from fire.
Today, that protective spirit remains. We invite you to make a wish for your own success, to find a quiet moment by the beautiful carp-filled pond, and to feel the powerful, calming energy of this unique sanctuary in the clouds.
